Next Update Previous Update

6/30/2010 1:57:18 PM

Well, it's been two weeks since our last update and we have a LOT to share with you. From the 22nd through the 29th we have a missions group visiting with us from Columbia Road Baptist Church in North Olmsted, Ohio. There were 4 adults and 10 teenagers. They accomplished a LOT during their visit. Their primary task was demolishing a 35' x 15' block building, which they did with great enthusiasm. They also finished a LOT of yard work while they were here. One day we went out and did a roadside trash pickup in the morning and then followed that up with a tract distribution in the same area in the afternoon. That went very well and was a huge blessing to all involved. On Sunday evening we had a group visit from Iglesia Bautista Betania in Mission, Texas. Brother Constancio preached the message with Brother Hector translating into English for the group. It was a wonderful evening. I won't try and tell you everything that happened through the week, but will leave that up to the 81 pictures included in this update! In other news, we have had our first local visitors to our services! On Sunday evening we had a family attend. It was a mother and two of her children, as well as her sister. On Wednesday that same family attended again. They were back on Sunday morning, this time with a niece of the mother and all 3 of her children. They were unable to make it back Sunday evening due to a medical issue with the grandmother of the family, but we expect to see them again. The children also participated in some of the sightseeing trips with our visiting group through the week. Please continue to be in prayer that we would continue to see visitors in the coming weeks and months. As we look forward, we have about 10 days before the next missions group arrives to help with getting the new building constructed. As of last week we have the majority of the funds available. We sold our 24' enclosed trailer which made up a lot of the lacking funds, but are still short at least $1,000. And, finally, please be in prayer about the weather. As I type this update Hurricane Alex is just beginning to hit our area. The rain bands have crossed into Starr County and we are preparing for some nasty weather. Forecasts are calling for between 7 and 16 inches of rain and winds possibly up to 50mph. We are also under a Tornado Watch. This would all be bad enough on a normal occasion, but with the demolition work from last week we have a 35' wall missing from our garage. We have reinforced that as much as possible but are not entirely sure how it will do through this storm. We will keep you up to date on that and all the other work going on here in the Valley!

The "calm before the storm". This photo is before the group began their demolition work.

This is the group shot as we sat down for orientation.

Here's a shot of the group at the Quinta Mazatlan.

We also visited the Museum of South Texas History.

This is Steve & Kris Williams at Caro's Restaurant.

Wednesday night we held services under the lean-to.

Kris Williams was our pianist for the week.

Shelly and Bekah work on washing the ministry bus.

Now that it's clean the girls also "seal" all the vinyl on the bus.

Shelly and Steve are working to clear out aloe from the fence line.

We saw a variety of spiders this week. This one is in the yard (in the aloe bed) and is a wolf spider.

Geneva learned how to make sloppy joe for a group of 19.

Bekah and Katelyn cleaning out the breeze way.

Melissa and Geneva work on laundry.

The first task in demolishing the building is removing the interior ceiling.

Next they had to remove all of the electrical wiring.

This is a good shot of the chimney "before". Aaron is preparing to take the top off.

Halfway done demolishing the chimney.

The roof is gone and the interior wall is beginning to come down.

Brother Chad stepped on a nail and needed to go for a Tetnus shot.

Steve and Stephen work on demolishing the interior wall.

Here you can see the roof is gone and the exterior wall is also coming down.

This is Ryan and Tyler swinging sledgehammers on the exterior wall.

Each day we would have devotions as a group. This shot shows Tyler Williams giving this day's devotional.

We saw this pig on the way to Loma de La Cruz one evening.

This is a shot of an altar on the Loma de la Cruz.

Here's a group shot from the top of Loma de la Cruz.

While at the top of the hill we saw this tarantula.....the first for this week.

Katelyn and Geneva are working on removing the rust from the breezeway gate.

Steve Williams attacks the "Devil Bush".

Here's a finished shot of this bush that has about a million thorns.

We were able to save both of the windows in the old building.

Some of the debris can be seen in the middle of the demolition.

Jorge Rios arrives with the dump truck to prepare for removing the debris.

We had to load all of the wood and "non-Block" material by hand.

Before the outer walls could come down we had to remove all of the rafters by hand.

With the rafters down the outer wall began to come down piece by piece.

Everybody had a turn swinging the sledgehammers. This is Kris Williams demolishing an exterior wall.

Jorge arrives with the Backhoe to begin loading the debris.

Most of the building is gone. The 2x6 header that attached to the garage is still there, as is an interior wall. The debris is slowly disappearing.

More debris is gone, as is that header and the interior wall.

Bekah learned a few of Melissa's recipes while helping in the kitchen.

Katelyn, Kris and Shelly worked hard on landscaping the ministry sign.

This shot shows Geneva helping as well.

Kris and Shelly painted the interior doors, as well as the interior side of the exterior door, in the casita.

Shelly prunes the dead limbs from one of the lime trees. She eventually did every fruit tree in the orchard.

Steve & Kris Williams and us at the Roma Bluffs river overlook with Mexico in the background.

One morning we did a roadside trash pickup in a nearby neighborhood. We managed to fill more than 75 30-gallon trash bags.

The group is stamping and folding tracts to get them ready for distribution.

Here the group is filling the door-hangers with the tracts and other information.

Here's a shot of the customized informational tract about the roadside cleanup that was done.

The finished door-hanger.

Kris and some teens are door-knocking to pass out the tracts and other info.

More of the group as they work their way through the neighborhood.

This is the second tarantula of the week. This one was found in our back yard while the teens were playing some evening basketball.

Sunday morning we held the first services on what will be the spot for the new sanctuary.

Braden & I sang special music for morning service.

Shelly, Valerie, Oralia, Selma and Kris after the morning service.

The week proved to be a long and tiring one for everyone.

Sunday evening we held services under the lean-to again.

The group from Columbia Road sang 2 songs for special music in the evening service.

Brother Rorigo sang special music as well.

Bro. Constancio (to the left) preached and Bro. Hector translated for the group from Ohio.

Geneva and Bekah spray painted the gate of the breezeway black.

Here they are almost finished.

Tyler works on trimming weeds around the property.

Here's a finished shot of the ministry sign with Kris and Katelyn.

Katelyn learned how to make pancakes this week. Specifically, 102 pancakes.

The guys are working on digging out the driveway to get ready for the gravel to be delivered.

The gravel arrives and is ready to be spread.

Now the guys are busy spreading the gravel in the driveway.

More spreading of the gravel.

The driveway is finished.

Stephen is working on chipping out the final row of block with a chisel and hammer.

Katelyn is sweeping off the concrete after all of the work is done.

Preparations for Hurricane Alex are underway. We constructed a temporary 8' wall out of the old ceiling plywood and put tarps over that.

The wall is complete. Lord willing it will hold up to the storm.

The week wasn't all about work. In the evenings the kids were able to relax and play some games. Here they are playing a game of Scattegories.

Another favorite past time was playing with Bo. Here Tyler and Corey Williams are taking a turn!
