Updates for 2008 - July

2008 07-26
This update is being done at about 9:50 this evening.  We find ourselves in Savannah, Georgia, preparing for our final "regular" deputation meeting tomorrow morning with Heavenbound Baptist Church.  Since our last update many things have taken place.  First, we made the trip from Urbanna, Virginia, down to Greenville, South Carolina, last night.  This morning I drove up to Brevard, North Carolina, to pick up the boys (plus our nephew Richard Freeman) from summer camp.  We then returned to Greenville and picked up Melissa and Addie and the 6 of us made the trip here to Savannah.  Second, we made progress with the bus.  The trailer company installed the new hitch and it certainly helped the situation.  I say helped because it's still far from perfect.  My father also repositioned some of the contents of the bus/trailer, which also helped.  However, my father can now go around 50-55, so he's steadily working his way towards Texas.  At around 7:00pm this evening he was in the De Funiak Springs, Florida area (about 75 miles from the Alabama state line).  He was forced to stop and wait out a strong thunderstorm passing by (our bus/trailer do NOT do well in high winds and heavy rain).  This is actually impressive progress, considering he left Virginia Friday at around 11:00am and can only go 50-55 mph.  He is still having a number of other small issues with the bus, so please continue to pray for his safety and the Lord's sustaining hand as this trip is completed.  As I mentioned earlier in this update, we will be meeting here in Savannah tomorrow morning and will leave immediately afterward for our own 26 hour journey down to Texas.  It is our desire to arrive sometime Monday evening, so please keep us in your prayers as well.  Finally, please keep the house in Texas in your prayers.  We've heard an encouraging report from Bro. Shue in Donna, Texas which leads us to believe our house may have escaped any serious damage from Hurricane Dolly, but we won't know the full extent of the situation until we arrive on Monday.

A few things we wanted to update you about tonight.  First, please keep the situation with our move to Texas in your prayers.  My father arrived today and we tried the bus with the trailer for the first time (they finished the vinyl work today, so it was the first day it was available).  Unfortunately, all did not go well.  The bus has the power to pull the trailer, but once you top 40 miles per hour it begins to "drift" or "sway" and becomes uncontrollable before you reach 50 mph.  This is obviously not acceptable for a cross-country road trip.  We had to take the bus into a trailer shop today to have a new "anti-sway" system installed, as well as a "weight distribution" system.  They should have everything ready by noon tomorrow, which is when my father wanted to leave the area to begin his way towards Texas.  Please pray that they will indeed finish the work and that these systems will fix the problems with his towing.  He only needs to be able to safely drive around 55 mph, and the trailer company seemed confident this would be possible.  Also, we wound up not being able to make our scheduled meeting tonight in Chesapeake, due to my being delayed in Powhatan working with the trailer situation.  Pastor Giles was extremely understanding about the situation, but we still deeply regret having to miss any of our scheduled meetings.  Second, please keep our house in Texas in your prayers.  You may have heard that hurricane Dolly has landed in Brownsville, Texas.  Our house is in Rio Grande City and they have called for evacuations from low-lying areas there due to flooding.  They average 22 inches of rain per year, but are expecting 15 inches from this storm.  To compound this issue, we have no insurance on the home, since no company would insure the property until we moved in next week.  So, two major things as we prepare for our move to Texas.  I know God is in control, and pray that He will allow the rest of this move to go smoothly.

Well, it's been quite a while since our last update, so we thought it was well past time to catch you up to date on what is happening with us.  At last report I was in Mooresville, Indiana, and Melissa and the kids were in Powhatan, Virginia.  Since then I have in fact had several meetings.  First, I had a good Sunday morning meeting with the folks at Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Shepherdsville, Kentucky, and then that evening with Berean Baptist Church in Greenwood, Indiana.  Both of those meetings went well, and it was a blessing to have the opportunity to visit with them.  The next day, Monday, I travelled into Bristol, Virginia, to be in the area for a Wednesday meeting.  I spent 2 very long days in a hotel on Monday and Tuesday....made longer by the fact that my computer died the day I arrived (the display on the laptop stopped working).  I was able to purchase an external monitor to use with it on Tuesday, but it sure is akward at this point.  On Wednesday I was able to present our ministry at High Point Baptist Church in Meadowview, Virginia, and then travelled back to Powhatan after the service to catch back up with Missy and the kids, arriving around 1:30am on Thursday.  We got an early start on Thursday in finishing our packing for our upcoming trip to Texas.  We still had all of the stuff from the RV scattered around, and it needed to be loaded in the bus and trailer we will be taking.  We were able to finish that process early Thursday evening, and then travelled to Urbanna, Virginia, to stay with my sister for a few days, as our next meetings were in her area.  We had those meetings this past weekend, both of which were with New Hope Baptist Church in Gloucester Point, Virginia.  These meetings went extremely well, and were a blessing to us as a family.  That catches you up to date on the meetings, now for a few other items.  Melissa was able to put the truck up for sale while I finished the meetings "up north".  She actually put it on the road Saturday morning, July 12th.  On Monday I received a phone call from a lady asking questions about the truck.  She then called back again on Wednesday (the 16th) asking if her husband could test drive the truck the next day.  They came on Thursday, took a test drive and left a deposit when they returned!!  The full payment was received on Friday (the 18th) and the truck is now gone.  We praise the Lord for allowing us to sell this truck very quickly, especially given the weak economy and surging fuel prices.  He is always good to provide for us, and He has done so once again through the sale of this truck (and previously with the RV).  Our bus is almost ready to leave for Texas.  Add Moore is finishing up the vinyl work this week.  I was able to help him with that process for about 3 hours today, and he's hoping to finish by Wednesday morning.  A photo of the bus is given below, although not all of the striping is completed on that side.  The work that has been done is wonderful, and we pray that it will be of great use to our ministry in Texas.  Braden and August left for summer camp this morning, and we won't see them again until Saturday.  Until then we look forward to a meeting in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Wednesday and a bit of last minute preparations until then.  We will drive to Asheville, North Carolina, by Friday at the latest, pick the boys us early Saturday morning and then drive the 9 hours or so down to Savannah, Georgia.  We will have morning services there on Sunday and then begin the trek to Texas immediately afterwards......time is getting close!

Our bus, now that the body work, paint and most of the vinyl work is done.  There are a few more small things for this side, but this is "more or less" the finished product. A closer look.  It is a vast improvement over what this bus looked like when it was purchased a few months ago.  We're very thankful to Dickie Snellings and Add Moore for all that they have done to make this possible!

Hello from Mooresville, Indiana.  Again, I've been here for a few days and am just now getting to this update.  It's been a busy few days since our last update.  We've finished packing up the RV and delivered it to the dealer, so it is officially gone forever.  Melissa and the kids made the trip safely back to Powhatan, Virginia with the truck and U-Haul trailer, and she is extremely glad to be finished with that!  I've had the opportunity over the last few days to spend some time with the folks here at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Mooresville and have enjoyed my time with them.  We had a good service on Wednesday evening, followed by a time of fellowship among some of us men following the service.  Yesterday I joined with the church as they went out distributing flyers for their upcoming VBS.  I'll be leaving Mooresville tomorrow morning heading down around the Shepherdsville, Kentucky area for meetings there Sunday morning and then up to Greenwood, Indiana for a meeting Sunday evening.  I'll leave Monday and head down around Bristol to stay in a prophet's chamber for a couple of days before heading up to Meadowview, Virginia for a meeting on Wednesday.  Then I finally meet the wife and kids again on Thursday.  Everyone and everything is doing well.
The main "living room" area of our RV as we are in the middle of packing. The prophet's chamber at the church we were parked at slowly begins to fill up with boxes. Braden's working on those arm muscles as he helps to tote boxes. Loading the RV for Melissa's journey to Virginia.
Just a few more boxes and we're done. Temporary street sign at Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Mooresville, Indiana.  Their regular sign had to be removed due to road construction. The building to the left is their gym (I think) as well as the daycare and college.  The building to the right is the main church building, including all of the offices. Another shot of the church building.  Their is also a bus garage to the right of the building.
A children's play area with a nice covered pavilion behind it. The front of the main church building. A lot of the church is done in a more "western" style rough wood, which is actually a style Melissa and I really like! The main church auditorium.  Notice the wood spoke chandelier in the middle.  All of the pews were handmade by a member of the church.

Today we are in Harrisburg, Illinois.  We've actually been here a few days, but since I didn't put a post out yet, well........  We are going to be here for a few more days....actually a few more days than we originally intended to be here (more on that in a moment).  Since our last update we've been busy with a number of meetings.  We left Ohio and went down into Tennessee and then back up here into Illinois.  We are staying on the grounds here at Bible Baptist Church in Harrisburg, Illinois, and had services with them last night.  We will have services again with them on Sunday morning and then I will be travelling from here up to Effingham, Illinois, on Sunday afternoon for a meeting with Southside Baptist Church.  In other news, if you've read any of our recent updates or our July prayer letter, then you know that we are actively trying to sell our truck and RV.  We've made a little progress!  As of today we reached an agreement with a dealer here in Illinois to trade our RV in towards the purchase of a mini-van.  They gave us $250 less than our asking price for the trailer (which really impressed us) and then took $6,900 off the sticker price of the van to get it down where we can afford it!  They really went the extra mile to get us into a very nice van at a very reasonable price.  To top it all off, we will walk away from the dealer with a reasonable check because they owe us money (the trailer was worth more than the van we are purchasing).  I kind of like purchasing vehicles this way.  Please do continue to be in prayer regarding the truck though, as we do still need to sell it.  Melissa and I will be parting ways this coming Tuesday (July 8th), with me staying up here in Indiana and Illinois for another week to finish our meetings in this area, while she and the kids travel back to Powhatan and stay at her mother's house there.  We will meet up again in Virginia on July 17th and finish our last few meetings together before leaving for Texas on July 27th.  God continues to provide and has once again taken care of a large need that we have.  Below are a number of photos from our recent meetings.

Everything happened as expected since our last update.  On 6/18 we did indeed enjoy services with Nelson County Baptist Church in Bardstown.  They were a very friendly church and we enjoyed our time together with them.  The next day we drove into Springfield, Ohio, and spent a couple of days with my father.  We also had the opportunity to see my step-sister (Missy Rohrer), her husband Ryan, and their two children, Landon and Laken.  Our children definitely enjoyed spending time with her kids!!  Yesterday we left Springfield and drove about 4 hours up to Richfield, Ohio.  We will be having services here this morning with Bible Baptist Church and then will drive up to Ashtabula, Ohio, this evening for services at Lighthouse Baptist Church.  We will drive back after services and then tomorrow will make the 9 hour drive down to Seviersville, Tennessee, (near Pigeon Forge) for a meeting in that area on Wednesday.  One prayer request: we have decided that we will not be keeping our RV as we arrive in Texas.  However, it would work out just as well (perhaps better) to sell it now while we are still on the East Coast.  We've placed it up for sale, so please pray that the Lord's will would be done in this situation, and our preference is that it would sell quickly.
My dad and I pose for a quick photo. Our house parked in front of my dad's house. Braden and Landon playing with the computer. Addie Grace, August and Laken were all inseperable.

Well, we made it back to civilization today.  For the past couple of days we have been down in a "holler" at Fort Boonesborough State Park in Kentucky.  It was a nice campground and a wonderful place to stay....they just didn't get any cell signals, which meant no cell phones and no wireless internet.  But, it was nice to have some peace and quiet!  We enjoyed the opportunity to spend both Sunday morning and evening services with Berean Baptist Church in Winchester, Kentucky this past weekend.  The church was very friendly and we thoroughly enjoyed our time with them.  We also enjoyed getting to know Pastor Taylor and his family better while were in the area.  We had lunch with them Sunday afternoon between services and then toured the Boonesborough Fort together with them on Monday.  Today we made the short (2 hour) drive over to Bardstown, Kentucky.  We are staying on the grounds here at Nelson County Baptist Church.  We are looking forward to getting to know this church family better as well.  We will be spending some time with the pastor and his family today and tomorrow and will then have services with the church tomorrow evening.  We leave here Thursday morning and head over to Springfield, Ohio, to spend a couple of days with my father before heading further north for our scheduled meeting on Sunday.

The musket was very loud and left a terrible smell like rotten eggs.  The kiddos (in the background) froze at the BANG. Here's a closer shot of the kids playing. Although the day began stormy, the sun was out by the end of our tour.  This little mariposa was too pretty not to photograph. One last shot of a family cabin.

We've had a good week, which was supposed to be relaxing.  It was certainly fun, and the kids enjoyed it, but I am tired and sore from all our relaxing!  Finding ourselves here in Virginia we've availed ourselves of the pool at Melissa's mother's home.  The children haven't been swimming since they were at her house last summer, so they've enjoyed the opportunity.  They also enjoyed the opportunity to try scuba diving, which they took to very quickly!  This past Wednesday we took the opportunity to visit with our friends at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Powhatan.  It was good to see them once again.  We're getting ready to "resume" travelling tomorrow as we head out from Virginia to Kentucky and a meeting there this weekend with Berean Baptist Church in Winchester.  In other news, please keep both August and Addie in your prayers, as they are both suffering with minor colds.  Addie still has the cough in addition to a runny nose and low-grade fever.  August is also picking up those symptoms now.  Finally, I wanted to share some good news with you.  In our last prayer letter we announced 3 new supporting churches.  We now have 2 more!  Lighthouse Baptist Church in Loxley, Alabama and Immanuel Baptist Church in Monticello, Kentucky became our 34th and 35th supporters, bringing our overall financial support up to 57.03%.  We had mentioned last year that we needed to reach 58% to leave for language school in July/August, and it certainly appears that this goal will be quickly passed!

Now Braden goes by himself. And finally, me.  No, my legs are not deformed....it's just the water.

It's been a week since our last update so it's definitely time to inform you about what is going on!  Since our last update we have been rather busy.  On 6/3 we moved from Swannanoa, North Carolina up to Stuarts Draft, Virginia.  That evening they had some powerful storms roll through and we had to evacuate our trailer and stay inside the church for a couple of hours.  We found that we also had a new problem with the trailer, that being a sizeable leak in the master bedroom.  I found the source of that leak the next day and repaired it.  Also on 6/4 I picked up about $1,000 worth of supplies which were donated to us by Victory Baptist Church in Staunton, Virginia.  That evening we enjoyed a wonderful service with Valley Baptist Church in Stuarts Draft (where we were parked).  On 6/5 we travelled to Amelia Court House, Virginia and parked the RV at my mother's house there.  Along the way we also managed to stop in Powhatan for our regular dentist appointments.  On 6/6 several members of our sending church came out to help us "re-pack" our enclosed trailer to prepare it for it's trip to Texas in just a few weeks.  On 6/7 we made it out to Powhatan County High School to see Melissa's sister graduate (along with several other teens we knew from our church).  Yesterday we had our final services with our sending church, Holly Hills Baptist Church in Powhatan, Virginia.  They had a normal morning service followed by a pot-luck dinner and then an afternoon service.  We enjoyed the opportunity to once again fellowship with our "family" and will miss them all dearly as we depart for the field.  We will continue to stay here in Amelia for the remainder of this week and then will leave on Saturday for Kentucky and meetings there on Sunday.  Everything and everyone are well (except that Addie has a persistent cough right now).
Our trailer is hooked up at my mother's house in Amelia and will be moved to Powhatan tomorrow for "re-packing". It's tomorrow (time flies).  We are definitely fully packed! Pastor Blackwell, Steve and Alex Cominsky and Ed Reynolds all came out to help with the work. Another shot of us working, as we off-load the front of the trailer through the side door (our goal was to lighten the load on the front of the trailer).
Melissa's step-father, Richard Edelen, his brother James, Melissa and I are all waiting for graduation to begin for Melissa's sister, Kirsten. The 2008 Powhatan County High School graduating class. Our final service with our church was also "Graduation Sunday", when the church recognizes each person graduating from High School and College. David Shultz leads the congregational singing.

We're still here in Swannanoa, North Carolina.  We had a very good weekend.  On Sunday morning we had a walk-in meeting with Swannanoa Heights Baptist Church.  The pastor welcomed us warmly, as did the rest of the church.  He asked us to setup our display and gave me some time during the Sunday School hour to share information regarding our ministry.  He also asked that I keep in contact with him in the future.  Yesterday evening we drove over to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and presented our ministry at Liberty Baptist Church.  This church also welcomed us warmly and we had a wonderful evening with them.  There are some photos from these meetings below.  Today has been spent making some travel arrangements and preparing our prayer letters.  We already have an interesting story to share in that regard.  About 10 minutes ago I sent out the e-mail version of our monthly prayer letter.  About 5 minutes ago I received a phone call from Pastor Mike McDaniel with Currytown Baptist Church in Lexington, North Carolina.  He had just received our prayer letter by email and "for some reason or another" decided to look at our schedule on our website.  He noticed that we were going to be in Knoxville, Tennessee on June 25th.  His church is having their mission conference from June 23rd through the 25th.  Since we're going to be "relatively" close he was wondering if we'd be interested in coming sometime during that conference to present our ministry!  That's enough of a blessing in itself, but wait, there's more.  I've never spoken to Pastor McDaniel before!!  I had attempted to reach him a few times without success.  "For some reason though" I've had him on our email prayer letter list and he's been receiving our letters every month.  Now, I am scheduled to be with him on June 24th.  It's always exciting to watch God provide us with these unique meetings in His perfect timing.
