Updates for 2006 - August

2006 08-31
We had an enjoyable service at Old Suwanee Baptist Church last night in Buford, Georgia.  The people were very warm and receptive, and we thank the Lord for this unplanned opportunity to present our ministry.  One the way home we received a phone call from a church that I had dropped literature at while out visiting earlier in the day. The pastor invited us to visit with them on Sunday and was very friendly over the phone. It is contacts such as these that we pray for in filling out our schedule, and we are very thankful when they are provided.

Our truck is back out of the shop and it wasn't too bad. The leak was only O-Rings, and the extended warranty again paid most of it. The RV repairs are also coming in lower than expected and should be done by Wednesday. We had two good meetings yesterday and another scheduled for Wednesday, so all is well on that front. We did hear from First Baptist Church of Lorton that they voted this past weekend to take us on as their first missionary family. Praise the Lord that we are making steady progress towards full support!

We have arrived safely in Cleveland, Georgia -- finally. Our 10 hour trip took 15 hours due to getting lost twice, having a flat tire and other miscellaneous problems. But, we are finally here. We our going to have to put 2 new tires on the truck, get the spare tire hanger fixed, get a leak fixed under the front end and get the RV fixed (we hit a hill with the steps setting up, beding them back about 8 inches). I know the RV repairs will be at least $400, and the truck will be more than that, so we are curious to see how God will provide for this one. He is faithful, so we know He will! Please also be in prayer for our meetings while we are down here, and for additional opportunities while we are in the area.
Our "home" setup at Leisure Acres Campground.  It was the cheapest park in the area with full hookups, but was actually a very nice place to stay. Their lake looked decent, but I tried taking the boys fishing a couple of times and they just wouldn't bite! A dragonfly by the lake. We're enjoying the good weather while it lasts -- winter will be here soon enough!

Today is our middle child, August's, Birthday. Yesterday we had a good visit with Sharon Baptist Church in Hampton, Virginia. As part of his birthday celebration we have done a little sight-seeing (we call it a field trip -- everything is a teachable time) in the area.  Pictures are shown below.  Tomorrow we leave for a 10-hour trip to Georgia. The next couple of weeks will be very busy, so we appreciate all of the prayers that we know will be offered for us during this time.
The swamp at First Landing State Park is beautiful in it's own strange  way.  The Spanish Moss seen hanging from the trees is a popular attraction. These Bald Cypress trees are an intriguing design by God, that modern science cannot explain.  The knees (the wide based of the tree) help it stay stable in the swamp. Not someplace that you want to go walking....and be sure to put on bug spray for all the mosquitoes. Early explorers used this water for long trips, as it contained special "stuff" that kept the water safe for drinking over long periods.  Who would have thought!
I'm not sure what causes the clear patches in the water, but they are as shiny as a mirror. The marble effect caused by the algae in the water is quite beautiful in the bright afternoon sunlight. This is the new lighthouse at Cape Henry.  We also had an opportunity to climb to the top of the old lighthouse, but unfortunately do not have any photos of that.

It's been a little while since my last writing, but we've stayed plenty busy. We enjoyed a week off in West Virginia visiting family, but still managed to make some good contacts and had some good "drop by" visits with some churches in that area. This past Sunday we were able to present our ministry with First Baptist Church of Lorton here in Virginia and that seemed to go well. Pastor Harrah there seems to believe we will be voted in as their first ever missionary this coming Sunday. What a blessing for both us and them! Today we are at First Landing State Park in Virginia, preparing for a Wednesday evening meeting. The park is beautiful. We took a sunset stroll along the beach (not a public beach) and were able to see a large number of dolphins playing about 200 feet off the shore. Tomorrow we will take the Cyprus Swamp hike and explore more of God's wonderful creation. It's a great opportunity to show the children the wonderful world that God has created for us.

We enjoyed a wonderful week of fellowship with Harvest Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina this past week. We are very thankful for their hospitality and warm welcome that they extended towards us. Since our last writing Braden has also been able to attend camp and return safely. We also are very thankful that our daughter was relatively unharmed after unwisely sticking a set of keys into an electric socket. A couple of burns and a finger that was split open, but other than that no major injuries!
Road-front sign advertising the 2006 Missions Conference at Harvest Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina HBC follows a distinct theme for each conference.  For 2006 the theme was "Where there is no vision the people perish". A small church doing a big work.  They prove that it's not the size of the people, it's the size of their God that matters. Their Spanish-speaking ministry meets in this small building located on the church grounds.
The bus ministry is a major part of HBC.  Every one of these vehicles is used to help bring people to the church, and ultimately into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Through their faith promise missions program, HBC is able to support a wide variety of ministries throughout the world. Pastor Gant, standing, is the shepherd of this flock and is seen here speaking with another missionary family. People are just beginning to arrive for one of the mid-week missions conference services.
Missions conferences are a wonderful way for missionaries to get to know one another better.  Shown here is just one of the families that we were able to meet during this conference. We are very thankful for the display God has allowed us to have, and pray that it will be used to help others learn about our ministry. Saturday is visitation day at HBC and here we see some of the men gathering in preparation for this time. Home sweet home.  HBC allowed us to park our house on their grounds for the week, saving us quite a bit in campground parking fees.  Our mobile schoolroom (truck) is sitting behind the house.
